I read an open letter from the villagers of Sitio Kabute in regards to the displacement in 2008. I am working in human rights group based in Hong Kong and recently was informed that some villagers, children in particular suffer from lack of food and malnutrition. I wonder if I directly communicate with the villagers to learn more details. I am working on right to food and nutrition issues.
Greetings and thank you for extending your sympathies and solidarity with the people of Sitio Kabute. Just to give you a glimpse, as of now, their fight for a decent dwelling place and access to livelihood is still on, although there is still a deadlock between the alleged owners and the residents pending before the court. This is in the face of the open possibity of demolition anytime the ‘bank/owners’ wants to in collusion with local police. Worst, they don’t have access to stable source of water and electricity and only avails of water at a price. As what have you mentioned, indeed many children suffered from malnutrition due to lack of food and health care, which also cost the life a newly-born in late 2008. Not to mention many out-of-school children/youth.
This is furthered by continued harassment by the ‘owners’ through their armed-private guards who are making rounds at least 3x a day in the community. Early this year in fact, a joint team by the police and soldiers conducted civil miltiary operations in the community in guise of feeding program, as local cause-oriented and partylist groups are actively assisting the villagers in their fight.
Again, thank you for your concern. You may direct your correspondence with BAYAN-ST, email: bayan.st@gmail.com or channel thru my email: yeisha21@yahoo.com
